In February of 2023 my husband, Fr. John, was diagnosed with bladder cancer. The doctors identified three small tumors; one was high grade and fast growing. We wasted no time and scheduled the three-week program at Oasis of Hope Hospital in Mexico. I was able to go with him for no extra charge. We were very excited to find that their great treatments incorporated a plant-based organic diet, fresh juice, as well as a host of vitamin drips, supplements, and many different holistic treatments.
“What happened,” you may be wondering? How could my husband get cancer when we juice and eat organic whole foods, when he’s a HeartMath biofeedback practitioner who teaches resilience advantage and de-stressing? Who teaches emotional and mental detox at our juice retreats and guides people through the letting go process? Some people have said maybe our program doesn’t work. Well, let me tell you how well it works and how it all broke down.
The breakdown started in January of 2022 with a leak behind our kitchen sink. When we finally realized what was going on, we had a significant black and pink “mold garden”. We had to rip out our entire kitchen—everything was taken out but our refrigerator. We ended up with no other appliances, no sink, and no countertops and cabinets. It took a good week for the mold remediation and drying to be complete. It took five months to have our kitchen restored. Meanwhile, we had to eat out for all our meals. I was not able to juice or make any of our typical organic meals. We tried to make good choices in eating out, but it was not the same. And a glass of juice here and there from the local juice bar wasn’t nearly enough. Less than a year later, my husband got the alarming diagnosis.
Before this, for five years, we had kept small bladder growths that were termed by his doctor to be just “a nuisance” at bay. He’d remove them and say there was nothing to worry about. But five months of eating out on pesticide-sprayed fare which probably also contained plenty of GMOs, with very little juice, was the perfect setup for cancer.
Right about the time when we heard the alarming news regarding his diagnosis, we met Rob and Rachel Clausen. Rob had been diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer with a tumor the size of a tennis ball. He wasn’t getting the help he needed from a number of holistic treatment centers in our area. Then, they found Oasis of Hope. When we met Rob, three years after he began his healing journey, he was cancer free. He was found to be cancer free after six months on the program. Rob’s story was convincing. When we learned that in addition to their holistic program, Oasis served only organic, plant-based food and fresh juice at their hospital, we knew it was the place for us. It paid off. With his follow up test in July 2023, no tumors were found.
I have met people who have healed from cancer simply by changing their diet and juicing. But usually people have needed to add other treatments along with juicing and an organic, mostly plant-based diet. I’m excited to share with you the amazing cancer-fighting properties of a variety of juices.
14 Cancer-Fighting Juices
The healing power of fresh juice was called the “Miracle Cure” in 1905 when a doctor treated TB with the juice of raw potatoes, carrots, and celery. In 1950, Dr. H. E Kirschner treated 200 TB patients at Olive View Sanatorium in Los Angeles. He found that when carrot juice was mixed with green juices, recovery was accelerated. He also found that cancer, heart disease, prostate disease, and neuritis could be treated with fresh juices. In the 1950s Dr. Max Gerson published a book on how he treats cancer with fresh juices. Though all this work was called promising, it never became mainstream advice.
- Wheatgrass juice can neutralize toxins and carcinogens in the body and aid in the treatment and prevention of cancer.1 Wheatgrass juice may decrease myelotoxicity in breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. If you can’t get fresh wheatgrass juice, use wheatgrass powder such as SweetWheat.
- Watercress can significantly reduce DNA damage to blood cells, which is considered to be an important trigger in the development of cancer. University of Ulster scientists also found that it causes significant increases in blood levels of lutein and beta-carotene, two antioxidants that fight cancer.2 It also contains isothiocyanates and gluconasturtiin—cancer fighting phytonutrients.
- Celery juice offers two phytonutrients—luteolin and apigenin—that help to halt angiogenesis, which is blood vessel growth to tumors that feed them. The leaves are even higher in apigenin than the ribs. Always include the leaves.
- Broccoli juice offers sulforaphane and isothiocyanates that are big cancer-fighting phytochemicals. Broccoli sprouts are even more powerful.
- Carrots contain fisetin, a flavonoid that has the potential to target multiple signaling pathways in cancer cells without presenting any toxicity to normal cells. Its polyacetylenes inhibit cancer cells.
- Ginger has been shown in studies to suppress cancer growth and kill cancer cells.
- Spinach is rich in phytonutrients that bind to free radicals that can damage cells and contribute to cancer. Studies show they can protect against cancer of the mouth, esophagus, colon, and stomach.
- Bell peppers and citrus can suppress vascular endothelial growth—the signaling factor for new blood vessels that feed tumors.
- Lemon. Limonene in lemon peel has been shown to reduce tumor size by 60 percent in six to eight weeks.
- Berries have antioxidants that protect cells from free radical damage.
- Strawberries, apples, and cucumber contain fisetin that shrinks blood vessel growth to tumors. It also hinders multiple signaling pathways depending on the type of cancer.

The Juicing Lifestyle Made Easy
I recommend that if you want to proceed with your best shot to overcome cancer, drink about 64 ounces of juice each day. That may seem overwhelming, but big batch juicing and good storage tricks can make a huge difference. You can store juice in airtight jars. Fill them all the way to the top and keep in the refrigerator. You can also freeze your juice! Get small canning jars and don’t fill them all the way to the top. Leave about an inch for expansion. Pull out jars as you need them. They should last in the freezer for about three months.
Next, get a juicer that you’ll use. Do you want to know what the best juicer on earth is? It’s the one you’ll use everyday. It might have every bell and whistle available but if it’s not easy to use and clean, it will soon grace a shelf in the garage or basement. I like the Nama J2 juicer —a cold press, masticating juicer, because it’s so easy to use. You just place your produce in the upper chamber and turn it on. You can walk away and do other things. You don’t have to stand there and feed produce through the machine. And it’s easy to clean. Use my code Juicelady for ten percent off. If you’re on a limited budget, get what you can afford. The Hamilton Beach is fairly decent for under $100; it’s a centrifugal juicer. Finally, if you are really strapped for cash, here are always garage sales where you might find a great juicer.
I also recommend that you get organic produce as much as possible. You want to avoid pesticides whenever you can. If you can’t afford everything organic, at least avoid the worst offenders. Take a look at the lists of the Dirty Dozen and the Clean Fifteen at ewg.org. They even have an app for your phone so you can check the list when you’re shopping. The Dirty Dozen are the worst sprayed produce. You should only buy organic when you come to the fruits and vegetables on that list. Those are the thin-skinned fruits like berries and grapes and leaves like spinach and kale. But when it comes to the Clean Fifteen, they have very little spray so you could buy conventional when you’re watching your budget.
