It was a horrifying moment in Jeff Bell’s life.
His wife, Sue, had just been diagnosed with aggressive stomach cancer. Devastated, they sat together in her oncologist’s office and listened to the treatment protocol her doctor recommended including chemotherapy, radiation and 4-5 surgeries.
Hearing this list, Jeff waited for the doctor to give his wife a prognosis. But nothing came. So Jeff demanded to know. There was no way they were going to move forward with treatment unless the doctor gave it to them straight. Finally, after a long hesitation and some resistance, the doctor finally told them.
The doctor said Sue had only a 10% chance of surviving 18 months, even if she did everything recommended. And she’d never be cured. Her doctor even admitted that the treatment itself could kill Sue and it would certainly wreck her quality of life.
When they left, Jeff turned to Sue and asked, “What are you going to do?” She knew exactly. And it wasn’t anything her doctor had told her to do.
