Internet had a timid start in the 1960s as ARPANET. But now in the 21st century, the internet connects us all under a virtual roof and is navigating us towards a borderless world. The introduction of wireless internet, or WiFi, has meant that we can have a connection on-the-go instead of only connecting using a dial-up modem.
In no time at all WiFi has taken the world by storm, and not surprisingly so. Surfing the internet from your sofa, from your bed, or even from your poolside chair is all possible thanks to WiFi devices. Modern day smartphones are owned by 68% of Americans and all smartphones come with a wireless function. But what exactly is WiFi?
What is WiFi?
WiFi is a registered trademark owned by the WiFi Alliance, a nonprofit international association formed in 1999 to certify interoperability of wireless Local Area Network products (WLAN). WiFi does not use any wires − it uses radio frequency or microwave technology to transmit data through the air.
WiFi radiation is more correctly termed RF (radio frequency) radiation because it operates within the range 3kHz-300GHz. That’s to say WiFi radiation is a type of electromagnetic field (EMF).
Is WiFi Dangerous?
We have long been told that the form of radio frequency radiation that WiFi devices utilize is non-ionizing. That is to say it doesn’t have sufficient energy to break the bonds that hold molecules together, and that there is no heating effect… so therefore it is harmless. Or at least that’s what we’re told.
But thousands of peer reviewed studies now tell a different story. WiFi radiation may not cause a thermal heating effect, and it might be non-ionizing − but it is far from harmless.
WiFi Radiation Linked to Many Diseases
Independent research dating back some 80 years links WiFi radiation to a long list of adverse biological effects, including:
- DNA chain breaks
- Increased blood-brain-barrier permeability
- Disruption to brain glucose metabolism
- Creation of stress proteins
- Disruption of cell metabolism
Studies also associate WiFi radiation exposure with such symptoms as fatigue, irritability, headaches, and digestive disorders. Long-term exposure to WiFi radiation has been linked with many serious diseases − including cancer.
WiFi Radiation And Cancer
Numerous studies link WiFi radiation exposure with cancer. Notably, the German telecommunications company T-Mobile carried out a major independent study. It found that “on the cellular level, a multitude of studies found the type of damage from high frequency electromagnetic fields which is important for cancer initiation and cancer promotion.”
In 2011, the World Health Organization classified radio frequency radiation of the type used by WiFi devices as a Group 2B possible carcinogen. A study conducted by the University of Vienna have found WiFi exposures to cause genotoxicity as they break single and double strand DNAs in our body. This indicates that there are effects that may potentially surface with our future generations.
Besides cancer and genotoxicity, exposure to WiFi type radiation induces memory loss, diabetes, depression, insomnia, fatigue and so on.
5 Steps to Minimize WiFi Radiation Exposure
In my home and work environment I long ago made the decision to completely steer clear of WiFi. You might not feel you want to go “the whole nine yards” on this. Here are some ways you can reduce the burden of radio frequency radiation from WiFi on your body. You can pick and choose from this list according to how much you want to reduce WiFi radiation exposure in your life.
- Avoid using WiFi while you’re in a vehicle as the frequencies end up being bounced around, thus increasing your exposure.
- Turn off your WiFi when you’re not using the internet and especially when you go to sleep at night. Your body goes into repair-mode during sleep and radio frequency interference at this time slows down your body’s healing process.
- Choose to use a hardwired Ethernet connection in your home instead of wireless.
- If you do decide to keep your wireless modem/router, situate it as far as possible from your bedroom and as far as possible from rooms where you spend a lot of time.
- Be mindful of WiFi radiation exposure from neighbors. After first measuring these exposures with a radio frequency meter, you can install shielding materials to block out WiFi signals.
Note: other wireless devices such as Bluetooth headsets, cordless phones, smart TVs, and smartwatches also emit radio frequency radiation – the dangers of these devices are the same as for WiFi.
Current Safety Standards Do Not Protect Us
Safety standards do exist for radio frequency radiation emissions, but these standards are only based on thermal heating effects. That is to say they only consider these exposures to be harmful if they heat tissue. But these safety standards do not protect us from adverse biological effects which are thought to be the precursor to serious diseases. Scientists have already raised the alarm regarding this issue.
In 2015, scientists from around the world united for the International EMF Scientist Appeal based on the results of over 2,000 research papers. The appeal is the collective voice of 190 scientists from 39 different countries. They are calling for tighter regulations and more security measures when dealing with electromagnetic field exposures generally, and WiFi in particular.
Protecting Children From Wifi Radiation Hazards
Last year, 15-year-old English schoolgirl Jenny Fry was found hanged in woodland near her home. According to her parents she suffered from electrical sensitivity, making it impossible for her to sit in WiFi classrooms and have WiFi at home. The school refused to remove the WiFi. Speaking at the inquest her mother said, “I believe that WiFi killed my daughter.”
Act now to protect you and your children from WiFi radiation exposure; it’s best to be safe than sorry when it comes to our health and that of our loved ones.

Dan Quixoté says
Lloyd is correct. I’ve worked in wireless equipment design for over 30 years, from 30kHz to 3GHz, milliwatts to many-watts. In the late 2000’s I personally set the safety standards for wireless charging (WPC’s “Qi” format) after lengthy research. Starting at 400MHz and above, DNA strands can be broken or inflicted with sequence translocation when the applied fields excite mechanical shake, twist, and compression resonances of the helixes. Those would be cancer-provoking damage. Below 300MHz I’m not aware of significant non-thermal biological effects, which explain how we’ve been “lucky” with AM/FM radio, walkie talkies, CB’s, shortwave, and VHF TV not harming people en masse.
Lloyd’s precautions are good ones, although he doesn’t cover cell phone use. I’ve worked on cellular telephony for the last 18 years, coming to the same conclusions about cell phones about ten years ago, the science had gotten conclusive enough for me, as I doubted at first that they could be a problem. As you may have heard, you don’t want to talk on them next to your head if you can help it, use speakerphone mode or wired or Bluetooth headset (BT is very low power, usually keeping itself around only a milliwatt, although wired or speakerphone is better). Don’t park it all day long on any body parts you want to keep cancer-free, especially the pelvic and pectoral regions (trying to keep it classy here). I wouldn’t advise living within a third of a mile of a cell phone tower, or within a mile of a TV tower, if you can help it. Best wishes all.
Dan Quixote’, Could you refer me to any articles referring to cell towers and microwave towers being detrimental to our health?
www dot emrpolicy dot org/science/research/fact_sheet dot htm
www dot anticelltowerlawyers dot com/links/cancer-leukemia-news dot html
just search “cell tower cancer cluster”
You could spend at least a week printing out and reading the studies available…
Thank you for this information. I will be looking in to all of this. We have shut off our wifi and have hardwired our house. A cell tower was put in to our neighborhood .08 mile away 5 years ago and we’re just now looking in to the implications of living so close to one. We have a 3 1/2 year old and a 9 month old. My 3 1/2 year old is always complaining of her eyes hurting or a headache. I’m thinking it’s time to sell and move. Thank you again! I appreciate you getting back with me.
In 2010 I read a book titled; “ZAPPED”
by Ann Louise Gittleman,an award-winning author
of thirty books and a highly respected health pioneer.
I learned that if you are within 4 or 5 feet
talking on a cell phone or just carrying
a switched -on cell phone–without even
talking to someone yourself–you are being
bombarded by plumelike waves of microwaves, similar to secondhand smoke.
The closer you are to any cell phone–in an
elevator, on a crowded bus, or with your own
cell phone held up to your ear or tucked
into your pants pocket–the stronger the
signal reaches your brain or other organs.
In fact , the wireless industry’s own research
has found that the microwaves from a cell
phone penetrate about 2 inches into an adult
brain, deeper in a child’s head because the
immature skull is smaller and thinner.
The book also details many studies including
THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE CANCER
CONNECTION. How can RF exposure cause
cancer? Like ELF’s RF’s–even those below
safety standards- have been shown to damage
cellular DNA, which can lead to mutations
that can cause cancer and even be passed
to successive generations.
Zapped is an empowering guide to living
safely with the gadgets we can’t live
without.
Best regards, all ????

I know this was 2 years ago… but…
Why with all your credentials and knowledge with RF being detrimental would you advise using Bluetooth tech which uses RF
I have wifi networks all over town. I see that I can use 802.11n with a 13 db antenna and that I could make very good (100 mbps) connections at about 2 micro (not milli) watts.
But there is no equipment available that can emit such feeble power.
I’d bet that 2 microwatts on your roof would be doing a lot less harm than unshielded ethernet cables running through your walls.
Could you perhaps talk about the difference between shielded and unshielded ethernet cables?
And home-networking devices using the unshielded house wiring. isn’t that worse than wifi as the entire electrical system is radiating instead of just two points?
Excellent article. Please correct the one typo above the green symptomology box — “induce” should be “induces”. I would like to forward this article on to others, but not with typos in it because people already want to find any excuse to dismiss this kind of information as lacking credibility.
Hi Lela,
Thanks for catching that. Fixed!
I always try to turn off my computer, when not in use. I did not think that WIFI radiation would be harmful to someone’s health. Perhaps, there are many things that I should try to be careful from now on.
Silvia, it’s nearly impossible to avoid EMF exposure anymore anywhere. Please listen to this interview, to learn more.

So what about using mobile data, if switching off wifi and start using 3G or 4G data is that still bad for health (worried because Im on the smart phone and using the Internet soooo often. Nearly every hour of the day until sleep) Do I just need to break the habit and stop… Full stop :-/
2G / 3G / 4G is worse… see my comments way up at the top…
What was that little protective device that can be attached to cellphones, tablets etc shown in one of the documentary episodes?
Hi Maria,
Thanks for your message. The cellphone device discussed in the series was developed by Dr. Igor Smirnov and is called MRET. As far as we are aware, there is only one distributor of this product in the U.S. We have no affiliation with this website, but you can find the products at: http://www.thecellphonechipstore.com/
Hi Maria,
I am an Independent Representative of the Dr Smirnoff technology. Here is my website, you are welcome to contact me to get info on the 10 years of experience I have with this technology personally and as a Health Practitioner. Here is my website http://www.giawellness.com/kedzimorgan I am passionate about helping people discover solutions for the way they are feeling not up to par through no fault of their own. People eating, organic, exercising, working on relationships and personal growth etc, but still have obstacles to total wellness. This is a huge part of the puzzle and getting more problematic by the day as more ways to use technology cause us to be in closer proximity to devices. I have a huge part of the Health Story that I had to discover 10 years ago, and find a potent solution for, which is definitely MRET. Kedzi
Apart from WiFi, EMF radiation from power transmission lines delivers the same effect on the population and nature as a whole. We are today surrounded by technology and modern conveniences which make life easier but not necessarily safer, right.
To shed a bit more light on it – powerline electromagnetic fields have different (though not necessarily better) biological effects. 50/60Hz powerline fields alter ion transport across intra- and inter-cellular membranes, accelerating or inhibiting chemical reactions, depending on the reaction. Also within the reception range of bulk brainwave action. So not the greatest thing for physical and mental health. As you go higher in freq range, the effects become more just thermal and neurostimulative at high enough field strength. From 400MHz on up the issue becomes field-excitation of mechanical shaking of DNA strands resulting in sequence breakage and translocations – not great for cancer risk… for those really bored and curious, read the studies bibliography of IEEE C95.1-2005. I found C95 and its underlying studies to be the most helpful body of work when setting the safety standards for inductive wireless charging.
oh good they finally covered that , i don’t think i’ve watched all their stuff yet but i don’t recall them ever bringing up emfs as a major carcinogen too….
2G/3G/4G is worse; power levels are higher, frequencies are lower, closer to the first fundamental mechanical resonance frequencies of DNA strands. Do disregarding mode. See my comment way at the top.
I have an IPad and I usually have it on my lap using Wifi. Is this not a good idea?
Hi Elma, it would be wonderful to tell you what to do to protect yourself. Do you have time this week? I would not be without the Patented Protection I use, especially being Electro Hypersensitive as I am. Kedzi at AOL dot com
I’ve tried to stop using my laptop PC whose WiFi antennas I think were at the front edge on my lap since a highly skeevy lesion manifested at about my waistline. Same for any other wifi devices; I use a table or desk or bench or another chair to set it on now, not the lap. Testing the lesion naturally as if it might be cancerous, making it go away.
I am 60 years old, single. I got a tumor on my left breast when I took a bath on Sunday, Sep. 4th. I came to HCM City Medic Hoa Hao Clinic on Sep. 5th for an X-ray then a biopsy test. In the afternoon I came back to have the result, my case fell as ‘invasive ductal carcinoma. Then I came to Ho Chi Minh City Oncology Hospital on September 7th for some more tests: blood, urine, X-ray, mammogram, ECG. Can I drink ‘Ensure Original nutrition shake’ as my students offer me 12 bottles (8 FL oz /237 mL), I am looking forward to your soonest consideration.
Lien,
Were you sending your comment to me directly? If so, I can give you lots of information about what you have going on. Kedzi@aol.com

i say to be as proactive as possible, limited wifi use and all of the above, but we can’t live in bubbles and if all this powerful God given food, supplements, exercise and sunshine is so good for us… then focus on that more than anything. stress of all the unknowns will kill us faster if we obsess about it. live like God wants you to, laugh a lot and stop worrying.
I was planning to get wall to wall wi-fi in my apartment ,is this not a good idea
I live in a block of flats 2 story ones even if my WiFi is off all other properties WiFi breaks into my flat to , entering without my permission 🙈how do I protect myself from other people WiFi and I’d it possible to sue other internet companies who are in my property without my permission haha as searching in myvwifi detection there about several other properties and people’s wifi which I’m bring attract by or is there any way of blocking it as uven if my WiFi is disabled other people’s are not and in my home 🤔
I’ve had different Wi-Fi levels within the same room. On the bed or the main chair I sit at its high over 2 mw/m2 or more. Yet 1 meter away it goes down to .5. I had to rearrange my furniture.
