The benefits of cannabis for human health are well-known. What you may not know, however, is that this miraculously healing plant may be of benefit to your canine as well. The safest cannabinoid for your dog is CBD. Here’s the run-down on CBD for dogs: what you need to know plus the pros and cons.
The Endocannabinoid System
According to Dr. Ralph Mechaoulam, professor of Medicinal Chemistry at Hebrew University and cannabis research pioneer, humans have an endocannabinoid system. So does every other mammal on earth, including your dog.
The endocannabinoid system can be thought of a subtle, non-localized system in the body, like the lymph or endocrine system. Its job is to provide support and balance to all mechanisms and organs in the body. It relies on a complex system of cellular receptor sites which extends throughout the body.
These receptors are for endocannabinoids, the same basic molecular substances that are produced by the cannabis plant. In the plant, they are called phytocannabinoids. Endocannabinoids, however, are produced by the body itself.
Research into the benefit of cannabis is just starting to take off where humans are concerned. When it comes to research on how cannabis can benefit dogs or cats, there is almost none. Positive anecdotal evidence abounds, however – so much so that many veterinarians are now embracing cannabis. Their clinical experience suggests that canine conditions such as pain, nausea, seizures, anxiety/stress, arthritis, gastrointestinal issues, and cancer may all be helped in some way by this healing plant.
Cannabis Fills the Void
When the body cannot produce enough endocannabinoids to fill all cellular receptors, phytocannabinoids in the form of Cannabidiol (CBD) and Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) can be used in specific doses to provide supplemental support.
“We now know that the endocannabinoid system regulates a lot of biological functions, such as appetite, food intake, motor function, reproduction, and many others, and that is why [cannabis] has such a wide therapeutic potential,” says Dr. Cristina Sanchez, lead cannabis researcher and professor of biochemistry and molecular biology at Complutense University.1
Like all bodily systems, the endocannabinoid system can become imbalanced through bad lifestyle habits, poor diet, chronic stress, and the buildup of toxins. And like other systems, imbalance can lead to a host of disease conditions.
The Entourage Effect & Pet Healing
The term Cannabis refers to all plants that belong to this genus, including hemp, psychoactive strains with high THC, and more. There are literally hundreds of cannabis strains. Within each strain, there are hundreds of phytonutrients, terpenes, variations of CBD and THC, and other healing substances. Scientists have discovered 200 different kinds of terpenes in the hemp plant and over 400 in strains with higher THC content.
The way terpenes, CBD, THC, and other phytonutrients all work together within the cannabis plant to affect the body is called the “entourage effect.” This is important to know, because the entourage effect is what causes healing to occur for your pet.
What is Hemp?
Hemp is the foundational plant for most pet-focused products. Hemp (a variety of Cannabis sativa) has minute (tiny) amounts of THC but not enough to produce psychoactive effects in humans and dogs. Many pet owners have experienced positive effects using hemp-based CBD for dogs, especially for inflammatory conditions.
The main thing to consider regarding hemp is the purity of the product that you purchase for your pooch. Hemp is legal to purchase in medical marijuana-legal states, and dozens of companies currently sell hemp products online.
Although hemp growers don’t need to use as much pesticide on their hemp crops as other farmers (high terpene levels create a natural pest repellent), the amount of hemp needed to produce one bottle of tincture is massive, so the overall concentration of dangerous chemicals in a bottle could be high.
Always buy your CBD oil from companies that can guarantee 100% organic sourcing and safe extraction practices. Many European and some American companies make this claim. But be sure to do your homework to make sure what they are saying is legitimate.2
Cannabis for Pet Cancer
Straight CBD oil derived from hemp may be just the thing that will get your best friend going again. After all, a 2016 survey conducted by Colorado State University and published the Journal of the American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association found that of nearly 650 people surveyed, 72% reported having used a hemp-based cannabis product for their canine friend (14% used it on their cat as well). In total, 64% of those surveyed felt that it helped them.3
In addition, CBD has long been proven to have anti-cancer and tumor-reducing effects, according to research at the University of Milan4 and several other studies. Some studies have pointed to the possibility that CBD may affect cancer genes by shutting down cancer cellular growth receptors.5
However, research on mice may point to THC’s ability to kickstart cancer apoptosis and stop cancer metastasis as well. Dr. Cristina Sanchez’s mouse models using both CBD and THC on brain and breast cancer has found that cannabis was most potent against tumors when the right amounts of THC and CBD were combined.6
Other studies on reproductive cancers and lung,7 bladder, colon, and pancreatic cancers have led to the same conclusion.
Mounting Pressure for Veterinarian Cannabis Research
According to a January 2018 report put out by the American Veterinarian, research into the pain management and symptom relief benefits of all kinds of cannabis is a top priority for veterinarians. Pointing to the April 2017 ruling by the DEA that THC-containing marijuana should remain a class 1 drug on par with heroin and cocaine, the article states that “The ruling hasn’t swayed the shared interests of pet owners and veterinarians who are curious as to how marijuana products could be used to treat predominant pet ailments, including anxiety and joint pain.”
One veterinary cannabis advocate, the late Dr. Doug Kramer, had gathered more than 300 success stories about the benefits of medical cannabis for cancer pain management and other pet symptom relief. During his life, he had become a champion for veterinarian cannabis research after cannabis helped his own dog, Nikita, live out her last months in comfort instead of pain.
“My position is the same as the [American Medical Association’s]. We need to investigate marijuana further to determine whether the case reports I’m hearing are true or whether there’s a placebo effect at work,” he told the American Veterinarian Medical Association (AVMA) in an interview in 2013.8
The AVMA and some major research institutions feel the same way. The AVMA has encouraged the DEA to change marijuana’s Schedule 1 status in order to “facilitate research opportunities for veterinary and human medical uses.”
At the same time, lead researchers at some of the nation’s top veterinary medicine programs are actively seeking federal approval for veterinarian cannabis research. One such institution is Colorado State University’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital, which is currently seeking participants in a clinical trial to assess how CBD may affect canine osteoarthritis and epilepsy.9
5 Tips When Using CBD for Dogs
If you decide to give CBD a try for your pet, follow these guidelines for the safety and health of your pooch:
#1: Start low and slow. CBD from hemp (or very low THC found in other strains) has many benefits on its own, but dosages can vary depending on the product. Always follow dosage directions on the product label. The organic pet CBD company Treatibles.com recommends 1 milligrams of CBD for every 10 pounds of animal weight. Some pets may require more or less depending on their condition and constitution. The general rule of thumb is to be conservative and observe your dog over a few days to a week. You can always up the dose if you need to.
#2: Use oil. CBD oil can be mixed in food or given straight and is the medium of choice for most pet parents. The oil allows the cannabis to be absorbed into the body through the liver, producing longer-lasting and less intense effect. Never give your dog cannabis in smoke form.
#3: Monitor Your Dog. This is especially important after you give your dog cannabis for the first time. It is also a good idea to keep a log of when and how much you administer in case you need to adjust over time.
#4: Go 100% Organic. It is of utmost importance that you avoid exposing your dog or cat to pesticides. Make sure you choose only organically sourced and safely produced cannabis products for your pet.
#5: Consult with a holistic veterinarian. Many vets are getting on board when it comes to cannabis for dogs and cats. If you live in a cannabis-friendly state, don’t assume that your pet’s vet will not talk to you about CBD or other kinds of cannabis. These days, some vets have even received special training in cannabinoids.10

Can you recommend any trusted companies to buy from?
Debbie,
We do not have a specific brand that we recommend at this time.
Hi Ty,
I can recommend a company if you are interested. Please contact me.
Hi , I am interested in a company . My dog is in pain. I live in Chicago .
Thank you
Kurapet. They have an objective, third party evaluate their product and data. My 12 yo beloved Golden Retriever is doing so well with CBD Oli from Kurapet.
Hello! I am interesting in company..My dog was just diagnosed with bone cancer
My Golden at 12 was diagnosed with aggressive osteosarcoma covering her entire hip. We were failing at pain management until we added CBD Oil which made a remarkable difference. I purchased it from Kurapet, recommended by my Traditional Chinese Vet. Their products are tested for safety, purity, and reliability by a third party lab – not in house.
Hi, i would like to know a company i could use. I live in UK. Could you let me know please
I would also like to know of a reputed company were we can get it for us humans as I also live in the UK , thankyou
NuLeaf Naturals in Colorado US ships to 40 countries. UK is one. They have a website – check them out. They offer CBD for humans & dogs & cats. 100% organic.
I use Canna-Pet right now, but that is the only brand I have tried. I am taking her off Carprofen and would like to only use CBD oil. Her arthritis has progressed. Any suggestions for a better brand? Thank you.
I work with a homeopathic veterinarian, as well as other veterinary specialists.
We use a company called Nuleaf. They produce for both human and pets.
(Same exact formula for both)
I do not work for the company. It is merely a suggestion for a formulation we have had good success with.
My dog is in stage two breast cancer. Can this make her live longer?
My little dog lived 3 years beyond surgery and diagnosis of mammary cancer. The last year and a half on CBD. It helped her tremendously. I am a rep for a company with organic, US based products for humans & pets. My dogs & horses are given a human formula. Great products. My email is cbdhempusa@gmail.com please put CBD in the subject line if you’re interested in more info. I’ll be glad to help out.
WAAYB Waayb Labs, Berthoud, CO http://www.WAAYB.com is brand very knowledgeable folks at The Holistic Houndry, Missoula, MT recommend after much investigation. I also use this brand. Company reps are very helpful!
We have a 2 year Lab Rescue Dog. We didn’t know when we got her that her back legs were very lame. She is a sweet girl and we are doing everything we can to help her. Will CBD help with very week knees and bad hips?
Please also see holistic or natural cures for dogs with hip problems etc..
I found a glucosamine and mix the other day recomended, because many owners also diet change, as many pet foods are not what we thought. Last look up apple cider vinegar, braggs organic unfiltered raw unpasteurized apple. Amazing for animals, I also love colloidal silver eating kind for children, for my cat.
Recently found both these remedies miracles for him inside and out. He had dermatitis, with infection in skin, vet administered antibiotics, which I would still have had him take. But until apple cider vinegar, and colloidal silver solution, his skin kept worsening. He’s 80/90 percent better now and amazing internal and external remedies.
I was wondering if you can offer some guidance. My dog was diagnosed with a low grade pancreatitis and IBD. Low fat diet was the only treatment per vet. I want to use cbd oil as she has arthritis and is a senior dog and maybe it will help her to feel better in general.
Since I have to keep her on the low fat diet, the carrier oils for cbd is in either coconut oil or hemp seed oil. She is a 15 pound dog and I am concerned if that oil will be bad for her. Can anyone offer any guidance with this? One company that uses coconut oil told me that she shouldn’t use that oil because of the high saturated fat. I was so excited about trying this for her however I don’t want to do anything to hurt her because of an oil or the quantity of that oil per dose.
Thank you
I believe you have many facts about cannabis correct, especially medical cannabis. However, your understanding of Hemp being a bioaccumulator plant and the toxic nature of all hemp products. And if you look around the world no one but Americans eat of put hemp on their bodies. Why, because it is a toxic plant that brings up toxic elements since the plant can grow down 20 feet. The rest of the world that has grown without a prohibition knows you used hemp for rope, paper, plastics, building material, etc. Notice nothing goes into the body with hemp around the world except the misinformed people who are making money on people’s lack of knowledge. What we need to give to our self an our animals in medical cannabis, which will depend on the illness, the strain used, body weight to even think of recommending a dosage.
I know that animal owners want to believe it is working and maybe a light dose for a lot of money works for them, what is not discussed is what toxin is in the hemp. In addition, hemp does not have the “by legal definition in 2014 Farm Bill”, enough THC to activate most of the CBD, (look at research in Spain/Israel/England which has a European conference every two years). The main reason for the illegal activity is removing funding in Spending Bill 32015 from DEA line item spending for enforcement.
Thanks for your view…are you a scientist/researcher ?…My vet suggested CBD oil for my senior lab for pain due to bad arthritis in rear leg/hip brought on from ACL injury at age 2…she is now 15…I am thinking of trying it…don’t like side affects of galliprant, etc…..Thanks for input
CBD oil has worked perfect for my chihuahua mix who was having seizures.
Her seizures are controlled mostly by feeding her a min of 3 meals a day so her blood sugar stays normal. However, when she is super excited she still starts to seize; but all it takes is 1 -2 pumps of CBD oil to stop it and it works immediately in stopping them.
She know this and starts to lick at the bottle in my hand.
That’s great that you have found something that help your precious pet. Best wishes Paula!
I just found out my Boxer/Anerican Bulldog mix has a Mast cell tumor. We are devastated. Her surgery is next week on Thursday to have it removed. Then it’s the waiting game of sending it to the lab so it can be graded. We are full of hope and faith it will come back as a grade 1. I’m very new to all of this and really need some advice. I have no problem letting my vet know I plan to give my baby CBD oil for the pain and to reduce/fight the cancer no matter what grade it comes back. She has been taking benadryl since the tumor was found 3 weeks ago Since mass cell tumors release histamine. It’s sad to see her so tired because of the Benadryl but I can’t take any chances. Can someone please help on where I can get the organic and correct brand Of CBD oil for my precious baby of only 4 years of age?
My Rottie Had Bone Cancer Tumor In Left leg Also Lame,3Days With Real Cbd/Thc 1:1 Ratio About The Size Of a Grain Of Rice Drop 2 Times A Day,3 Days Later Swelling And Lump Gone
please let me know where I can buy the CBD/THC 1:1 ratio?
Could you please email me and tell me what brand of CBD oil you use for your dog and where you get it?
Thanks!
CatherineMikkola@gmail.com
My chihuahua mix also has seizures and we currently use CBD oil in her food however it seems you are saying that giving your dog CBD while seizing helps to stop the seizure (?). Can you tell me what brand you are using please? Thank you!
Thank you. I don’t have any pets but saw my son’s dog last nite and now I’m inspired to try
her on CBD. The poor thing has been suffering quietly.
Anela’s “tutu”
That’s really interesting that cannabis has been shown to have tumor-reducing effects and anti-cancer in dogs. You’d want to make sure to include your vet if you did use CBD and make sure that everything was legal in your state. It seems like cannabis could really help dogs with cancer, though, and you’d just want to find somewhere to get it legally from.

How does it work for arthritis?
My doctor said to use cbd cream on skin for pain/arthritis.
btw Love this website, which I am seeing for the first time!!
CBD oil works great on humans and pets. if you live in pain CBD is the answere.
My 9 year old athletic dog had arthritis symptoms that Cosequin, Rimadyl, inject-able Adequan, and laser therapy couldn’t touch and damage that you couldn’t see on x-rays. Within 12 days of using the CBD oil we went on a 9 mile hike, where before 20 minutes was pushing it. We’ve now been on a 6 mile and a 12 mile hike and I’m about to take her on a 3 day backpack. Also important, on only day number two of administering it, her mental health greatly improved – she had been very depressed over her inability to walk without pain and she’s normally a happy dog. I’m a believer!
Hello, Christina!
Thanks a lot for reading the article and sharing the amazing results of using CBD oil for the arthritis symptoms of your athletic dog!
Enjoy the long hikes and backpacking with your furry friend.
could you please email me the brand you use for your dog?
Hello, read your article and I’m a firm believer in CBD. My best friend Maximus was recently diagnosed with cancer. With my vets help and a daily regimen of numerous holistic diets, I’m trying to do the best I can for my buddy…..could you please email me the company you suggest that has a quality brand CBD oil…..
Greatly appreciated, Jim P
Go to dogs naturally magazine and they have a market where you buy CBD oil just for dogs😁
I would also like to know brand name to use. My 8 year old English Bull Dog has had seizures every 2 wks for the last 6 years and is on a ton of medication but still occurs every 2 wks. I would love to find recommended brand of CBD to start using oh him.
Thank you
Our eleven year old cat was starting to display some hip problems. He would no longer crusie the neighborhood block walls as he was having some issues getting down from the wall. Amazing results within a week and noticeable results the second day. Wife said he is acting at least 5 years younger. Ordered from HolistaPet if I am allowed to say that here. Get the larger bottle of CBD oil as it is the same concentration and you get twice as much for about 10 bucks more. . Also use the treats mixed in with his other treats in his treat toy that he has to work at to get them out. . Our 23 year old 7 toe kitty passed last year, wish I would have know about this then. Even though she lived a long life I can not help but believe this would have helped her in her last year.
I can’t say enough wonderful things about hemp cbd oil for my pets. I have two boxers. One is old and has some pain issues and it helps him get around better. The other is very hyper and it helps calm him down. They know what the bottle is and get very excited when we get it out.
Thanks for your comment Sara! We are glad to hear that CBD oil is helping your Boxers.
My 10 year old Beagle started having seizures about a year ago. Our vet put him on phenobarbital 32.4 mg tab, 1 every 12 hrs. Was still having seizures, so now he gets 1 1/2 every 12 hours. So far it works. I have been reading about the CBD for dogs. My vet really doesn’t know much about it. I would like to try it on him to see if it would work for him. Also my other dog who is a rescue gets very upset when some one comes to the door. She fights with the Beagle. I think she needs something to calm her down. I really would like for someone to help me to know what to give them. Thanks
My 11 year old dog has arthritis in her back and various hot spots that are not going away.
Believe it to be neurological at this point. She has spinal surgery 1 1/2 years ago and is able to walk pretty well. Trouble gettting up from lying down.
Currently on Metacam and Gabapentin, which is helping a bit. Would love to see more improvement.
A friend recommended CBD oil from a company called Charlottes Web. Anyone know of it?
I am also interested in a name of a company. Charlie has lymphoma. Thank you
Charlette’s Web is a THC preporation produced by a Company in Colorado called Bluebird Botanicals. It was for a young girl who had multiple seizures and was successful in treating the condition. I think Gaia Botanical s is related to them.
Let me assure you that I am strongly attempting to resist the urge to type something to thhe effect of
“You would need to be stoned to be aware of all the variances of clinical research findings. These clothes get softer with every wash, which means that the harder you use them better you feel. Fortunately, more everyone is starting to overlook these misperceptions and possess began to embrace unique opportunities that exist with good quality clothing along with the important things about a product, such as hemp seed.
I recently started using CBD oil from a company that grows their own organic hemp, so we always know that it’s the same strain, same potency every time we get it. Since we use it for anxiety and reactivity, it’s hard to tell how my dog is feeling because she can’t talk, but I definitely notice a change in her mood about 30 minutes after she takes it. And it’s amazing how cannabinoids are substances that our body already produces, so you’re really not adding something super unusual to your dog’s body. I’ve read that it can cause a dry mouth, so I offer my dogs some tea or broth a few minutes after, just in case.
Thanks for sharing your experience with us Lindsay! We are glad to hear that CBD is helping you and your dogs.
A few nights ago my dog was diagnosed with cancer and we are all heartbroken. I want to do everything I can to help her recover from this. Thank you for pointing out that CBD oil can help animals with cancer. I’ll have to look into finding the best place in my area to get this for my poor baby.
Hi Ellie. I’m in the same boat as you. Looking to do everything I can. My almost 9 year old Goldendoodle had a growth on her lip that we had removed and it just came back malignant melanoma. We have our first oncology appointment tomorrow, but I wholeheartedly believe in the holistic/alternative med route and would love to have a buddy to bounce ideas off of. I’ve heard great things about CBD oil, and the vets don’t seem to give much hope.
I’m right there with both of you….my little guy just underwent surgery on Christmas Eve for removal of an anal glad tumor…the results came back yesterday as malignant, anal sac apocrine gland adenocarcinoma and I’m completely devastated…he’s only 6 yo. My vet offered me very little information in regard to prognosis or treatment only that it’s an aggressive cancer and metastasis and spread into other internal organs is common. Because of the surgery he had, he’s currently on Tramadol and Carpofren for pain, as they removed part of his rectum and colon….I’m wondering if CBD oil can be used along with these meds? I’m starting him on a low carb diet as well…..
My little pup just got the same bad news. I live in Canada where pot is legal. Hopefully I can get cbd oil for her. She had surgery but it spreads so quickly.
Hello Jane!
We will keep you and your little pup in our thoughts and prayer!
You should be able to get CBD oil in Canada.
Jane, Google search CBD 4 Paws (brand name of the product) or check out their website. They sell a CBD product for dogs (in Canada) and they provide different options to purchase based on the size of the dog. We received news of a growth on my pups spleen which doesn’t appear to have mestasized at this point. He’s 11… maybe we will get lucky but it is affecting his appetite. We got some of this and started giving it to him last week. Seems to help with appetite and overall well being. Surgery consult next week. Wish me luck!
Our dog cash just got diagnosed with gastro intestinal lymphoma…we are devasted he is only 8. We know there is no cure but want his last days to be comfortable. We have been researching cbd oil he is currentlyon heavy doses of prednisone and antibiotics….We want to try the oil and are trying to discuss this option with vets on both sides of the border…so far no response….Want to know how to proceed because of current meds his is on. Want to gain him some time with quality of life the most important factor. Has anyone used the oil with prednisone….low dose of oil and or decrease prednisone as you are going…….
I have 3 doodles and i am giving all three CBD oil for the health benefits. CBD- provides well being to every system of their body- decreases inflammation, pain, reduces stress and anxiety,-separation anxiety and aggression, reduces nausea and stimulates appetite, combates degenerate diseases and aging with increasing cognitive function,, helps to control seizures, inhibits cancer cell growth and so much more. I can recommend the best
Cbd oil!!!
Hi, my 100 lb Rottweiler, around 7 years, old, a rescue, just had a mass removed from his penis area and was diagnosed with “Cutaneous Melanoma”. They are giving him less than 1 year of life. My mind is in a fog, so please excuse my ignorance. I do not know the difference between Hemp and CBD.
He needs help now, as it’s a fast moving cancer.
Can Ty, or someone, please suggest to me on what I can try. I live on an isolated Island, so my resources are none.
Heartbroken and worried to death.
Thank you

My 11 lbs Shit zhu was diagnosed with Vestibular syndrome and given prednisone. At first it seemed to help but as soon as we tapered it down the symptoms increased. The vet put her back on one a day and we started also with CBD for dogs. She has developed now a cough, could that be from any of the two meds we give her or could that be something totally different. She doesnt (I think) have a temperature, 100.6F. How long after prednisone (7am) should I give CBD, and can you overdose on CBD?
Hi Maryna –

I am grateful for all the info however as I am sitting here my dog is dying from adrenal gland cancer all over her body. I am researching and researching and can’t find a holistic vet or cbd oil to give her now. Please send any help you can because I feel right now all this did was give me false hope. I am in the East Bay and will travel. Please add ways to find the resources to acquire the things and care you suggest will cure us and our pets. God bless you all always for all you are trying to do.
I wander if my cats would love the scent of cannabis oil. They love the apricot and almond oil which I put in my skin because they lick it off. The apricot and almond oil must have a nice smell to them.
I use JOY CBD on our almost 16 year old Labrador Retriever for some arthritis relief.
It seems to relax her also, she is less restless at night. JOY was recommended to me by someone knowledgeable, the product is triple lab tested.
I choose this pet CBD oil that I can use if for whatever reason the dog won’t be using it.
Check out the site below.
You have to start slowly with the CBD oil dropper to see how your dog does. You can call the company with questions.
Both my husband and I are on CBD capsules twice a day for some arthritis pain. I sleep better also.
