Bloodroot is a humble plant that produces delicate white flowers in the spring and has also been a Native American cure-all for centuries. Studies Prove the Cancer-Fighting Power of Sanguinarine
Hundreds of studies so far have demonstrated the connection between the plant antioxidant Sanguinarine and cancer. This suggests that this unique substance found in bloodroot may have chemotherapeutic (cancer killing) properties.
- According to a study published by the University of Minnesota Medical School that looked specifically at Native American healing modalities, researchers found that the Sanguinarine in bloodroot can “block proliferation and induce apoptosis in a number of different transformed and malignant cell types.” Study researchers discovered in particular that Sanguinarine, in a dose-dependent manner, is effective on certain kinds of skin cancer even when pharmaceutical drugs are not: “Of particular interest from a chemotherapeutic standpoint, Sanguinarine suppresses the growth of squamous carcinoma cells more effectively than normal foreskin keratinocytes, and inhibits the growth of a number of multidrug resistant cell lines,” researchers noted.
- The proliferation of cancer cells in the blood is a hallmark of leukemia. Any substances that can restore apoptosis (cancer cell death) show promise for leukemia healing. A very recent study published in the May 2016 edition of the journal Free Radical Biology and Medicine discovered that Sanguinarine in bloodroot can stimulate cancer cell death through the “activation of caspase cascade, DNA fragmentation and down-regulation of anti-apoptotic proteins” in laboratory leukemia cells
- A 2013 Korean study published in the journal Toxicology discovered that the same processes mentioned above − inducing of cancer cell mitochondrial dysfunction − allowed Sanguinarine to effect colorectal cancer tumor growth.
- A 2011 study at the University of California, Davis, found that Sanguinarine had a marked effect on prostate cancer as well. This was mainly through its effect on the protein survivin.
- The most exciting discovery as to what Sanguinarine can do is on breast cancer cells. The same University of Minnesota study also discovered that Sanguinarine had an effect on breast cancer cells after a single application. DNA synthesis of breast cancer tumors (MCF-7) led to tumor growth inhibition. Some aspects of this inhibition remained in place for at least three days after single administering (others came back after 24 hours). The overall results lead the University of Minnesota researchers to conclude that Sanguinarine may be able to “suppress breast cancer cell proliferation for extended lengths of time.”
How Does Sanguinarine in Bloodroot Kill Cancer Cells?
As researchers such as the ones above are discovering, Sanguinarine works in a variety of ways to inhibit cancer cell growth. Its one-two punch, however, is really felt in its ability to effect survivin, a protein that is specifically designed to inhibit cell death (apoptosis). When survivin is active in cancer cells, it can make them practically invincible.
Sanguinarine directly inhibits the functions of survivin in cancer cells. This involves not only creating balance within the cell but also by directly breaking down the survivin protein itself. Without survivin working in their favor, cancer cells soon become subject to the normal cycles of cell death.
Use Precaution When Considering Bloodroot
One thing is for sure about Sanguinarine found in bloodroot − it appears that a little can go a long way. Because Sanguinarine is a benzophenanthrene alkaloid, bloodroot is usually used as a topical microbial for skin rashes and lesions. It is also used in toothpastes (it helps fight gingivitis) and mouthwashes, as well as for the conditions mentioned above.
Although its cancer-killing effects occur when it is ingested, taking too much internally can lead to burning of the stomach, vomiting, vertigo, faintness, and dimness of eyesight. Because of this, never initiate your own at-home protocol with bloodroot. It should always be administered under the supervision of a qualified health care professional.

You are wrong in thinking and stating that there is not much known about local herbal remedies in the USA. All local herbalists, both indigenous populations and other trained herbalists have to know about pharmaceutical and traditional remedies through their extensive training. If only patients would go and see them first we would have more cures, extended lives and fewer side-effects from chemo and surgery. I think it would be difficult and very risky to apply bloodroot salve in that place. I’ve used the salve but never internally.

Enticing people to wild harvest blood root could lead to a serious loss of wild blood root plants much like happened to American Ginseng in the ADK Mountains of NY.

Blood root hurt me…was like sulfur acid on my skin and did hurt good skin cells and didn’t get rid of the precancer. I would rather have used a cream and baking soda on the precancer. I have scars now due to the blood root. It caused much pain and suffering. There are other ways to fight cancer that don’t hurt like this.
Most cancer treatments hurt…. surgery hurts, chemo hurts, radiation hurts…. it is your choice to which treatment you are willing to do and follow thru. I had some pre-cancerous lesions on my forehead. My Dermatologist prescribed 5-fluorouracil.: The drug most often used in topical treatment of actinic keratoses, as well as some basal and squamous cell skin cancers. Hello if anyone has used this chemo ointment knows it burns like crazy and turns your skin a vibrant red. I would try anything natural like bloodroot or curaderm, etc. My mom used to say: “Take your medicine” and if you can take a T of cod liver oil and not gag you can take anything.
Sanguinaria is also a homeopathic remedy and can therefore heal more gently due to the minute doses involved. A good homeopath would be able to prescribe a remedy based on your own individual charateristics and expression of disease.

I use it all the time. Doesn’t do anything on my skin if there isn’t a cancer or wart. It eats very aggressively but 98% of mine fade and don’t leave scars. They always came back after chemo cream and freezing at dermatologist I also use it internally for bladder cancer. It keeps eating the new cancers coming in I can feel it but much better than the first surgery and chemo I did and doesn’t take me down like the surgery and chemo it takes very little. So people who have bad experiences must not be using it right or the source isn’t good. I get terrible hot flashes with it but seems to be the only side effect i have except eating the cancers out. Usually only one application I take a week or two every other month. I had a lump in my breast that also disappeared when I was taking the blood root orally.

I live in Victoria, Australia and the only way you can get bloodroot (black sauve) is by donation. It cannot be sold. My Chichuahua had a melanoma on the side of her neck which was getting bigger. I deal with a homeopathic supplier who gave me some black sauve to try. To my surprise the lump was gone in a couple of days and was left with a scab which took a week to come off. The remaining wound will take a few weeks to heal with calendula cream. This is a miraculous herb and should be available to everyone.

Did anybody used escharotic treatment with bloodroot for the treatment of cervical dysplasia? I just finished my treatments. I was diagnosed with cervical dysplasia, CIN2 and high risk HPV in march this year. The only option my gynecologist gave me was the the LEEP procedure. She said this is the only way and if I dont do it, it will turn to cervical cancer. I was really scared. I did like the idea of cutting the piece of cervix, especcially that doc would not even give any guarantee that dysplasia will be gone. She said I might need more procedures, cutting more and more of my cervix. I did my research. I did not like at all what I learned about LEEP. I was looking for other options and iI am so glad I did. I found Dr Nick in Chicago. I decided to go with Dr Nick’s unconventional route. I had a series of total 10 escharotic treatments in his office. He uses blood root as one of the ingredient. It took 3 months. Dr Nick every time takes the picture of your cervix before and after application of the bloodroot. I can see huge difference looking at all the pictures. Now I have to wait 6 weeks and get my pap smear to find out if the dysplasia is actually gone. I really hope it is. The important thing is that escharotic treatment supposed to be also effective in getting rid of HPV, the cause of cervical dysplasia! Dr Nick has 99% success rate in treating cervical dysplasia and 91% success in treating HPV. Traditional approach, like LEEP is much less effective in dysplasia treatment, many times women need to repeat this invasive procedure which does not even correct the cause of the problem – it does not eliminate HPV. I have to say your doctors approach to CIN 2 result was pretty extreme…that is still quite a mild result when it comes to abnormal cells. It is not cancerous cells….CIN 4 is and CIN 3 is pre cancerous….which is what I had. Opted for the cervical surgery, which i believe is LEEP. After that I still tested positive for HPV during my next pap smear. I treated myself with HOMEOPATHIC THUJA, which is used to treat the wart virus. This was probably 10 years ago and all my pap smears have been clear since then. I know a number of women who have had abnormal 1 or 2 results, treated successfully with herbs and homeopathics.

Yes you should die to save a plant! Don’t forget God gave us nature for a reason. And yes we should take care not to kill all of something but from what I have read you seem to think a plant is more valuable than a human life. Some of us don’t have $50,000 to 150,000 to treat cancer naturally. For instance me 31 with stage 4 nueroblastoma. I have been doing what I can at home and my husband has spent $1000s to help me. Blood root works very well on topical cancers and lumps. I used it on my dog with great success. The lump was gone in a couple of days and completely healed in a couple of weeks

I believe I have a small cancer just above my eyebrow. I’ve had a melanoma removed from my back and cervical cancer. All removed by traditional methods. This is not in response to the other comments or statements already posted. It is my observation that the Native Americans have always used natural remedies. The problem seems to begin when these remedies have to be approved, from approval then what is found freely become costly to the poorest or neediest of persons and then become illegal to be gathered by the common person. According to the Bible in Revelation 22:2, (endpart of verse),” The leaves of the tres are for the healing of the nations”. God our Creator made these provisions for us.
Does anyone know if this works on liver cancer
I used it as one of the ingredients in Dr Schulze’s breast cancer poultice. The tumor was very large, about the size of a large goose egg. In 2005, a barber noticed a suspicious looking rough 1/2″ dark red patch on back of my neck. I had no idea it was there and it did not seem to be a normal scab. I had to wait 3 weeks for dermatologist appointment. It was November and fortunately I knew where there was dormant bloodroot patch growing in the yard. I broke off a piece the size of my little finger, washed off the soil, sliced off the tip, rubbed the fresh juice on the skin, and sealed a thin slice directly on the lesion (all within an hour of leaving the barber). I changed the bandage daily and massaged it through the bandage before gently rinsing it in the shower. The covering fell off the first day with yellowish pus underneath which took about 5 days to ooze out. It was completely healed in a week. I froze the tissue and took it to the doctor but I don’t know what it was because he refused to do a biopsy. Now there is a scar and it didn’t return.

This is where I’ve been getting Black salve paste and tablets for years! It only reacts to abnormal tissue and won’t on normal, the reporting burning feeling is an indication that its fighting something abnormal and destroying it… Hang in there the discomfort will fade and it will run it’s course. Heal and may or not leave a scar, if you catch something small it generally won’t!
